What Is Aeration?

Aeration is the method used by lawn professionals to alleviate soil compaction that naturally happens. The process itself involves creating small holes in the lawn to increase the flow of oxygen, water, and other nutrients to the roots. The process will give the lawn it needs and improve drainage.

Consistent aeration will keep your lawn looking healthy and save you from having a lawn that is distressed and dry (in addition to getting rid of those ugly brown and yellow patches).

What Are the Signs That Your Lawn Needs Aeration and Over-seeding?

It is time to aerate if your lawn/soil is showing one or more of these symptoms:

  • Your lawn is developing diseases such as yellow and brown patches.
  • Your grass stops growing or is growing at a slow pace
  • Your grass is thinning because the soil is so compacted that the roots can’t grow properly
  • You notice water forming puddles instead of draining properly during rainstorms
  • Your lawn is soggy
  • If you can’t easily stick a pencil into the soil or is hard to the touch
When Is the Best Time to Aerate?

The fall is the best time to aerate and seed your yard. The cooler temperatures and moist soil in the fall provide an ideal time of the year for the new grass seed to germinate quickly. Though aeration can take place any time of year our recommendation is to aerate during the fall when root growth is optimal.
